Drift Diver
Specialty Course
From $549.00
Duration 1 Day
Experience the freedom of going with the flow on Perth Scuba’s PADI Drift Diver Specialty Course. Drift diving allows you to relax, conserve energy and explore more of a dive site while the current carries you along.
Currents can create exciting diving conditions, but they also require careful planning, good buoyancy and effective communication. During two open-water training dives, you’ll learn how to assess conditions, plan safe entries and exits, remain with your buddy and use surface-signalling equipment confidently.
Rather than fighting the current, you’ll learn how to work with it while maintaining control, protecting the marine environment and enjoying the feeling of underwater flight.
Perth Scuba PADI Drift Diver Includes:
- Professional tuition from a Perth Scuba PADI Instructor
- PADI Drift Diver digital learning materials
- Two open-water drift-training dives

Who Should Take This Course?
This course is ideal for divers who want to become more confident in moving water or prepare for destinations where currents are common. Drift-diving skills are valuable when exploring reefs, walls, channels and offshore dive sites where your exit point may differ from your entry point.
To enrol, you must be at least 14 years old and hold a PADI Open Water Diver certification or an equivalent recognised qualification. You should also be medically fit to dive and have recent diving experience with comfortable buoyancy skills.
If it has been more than 12 months since your last dive, Perth Scuba may recommend completing a refresher before starting the course or joining a Sunday Manta Club dive.

What Will You Learn?
Your instructor will explain how currents form, how conditions can change and how to plan a dive that allows the current to do the work. Across two open-water dives, you’ll practise:
- Assessing currents, tides, weather and dive-site conditions
- Planning appropriate entry and exit procedures
- Maintaining neutral buoyancy while travelling with the current
- Staying together and communicating with your buddy or group
- Using surface marker buoys, reels, floats and lines
- Applying boat-diving and surface-support procedures
- Responding to buddy separation and other potential problems
- Drifting responsibly without contacting or damaging marine life
The first dive of this PADI Specialty Diver course may count as an Adventure Dive towards your PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification. Ask your instructor about receiving credit.
How Can You Start Learning Now?
Select your course date online and begin your PADI digital learning. Completing the knowledge-development component before your practical training means you’ll arrive ready to plan your dives and start developing your drift-diving skills with your instructor.
What Scuba Gear Will You Use?
You’ll use your standard scuba equipment together with appropriate surface-signalling equipment. Depending on the dive site and conditions, this may include a surface marker buoy, reel, float or line.
Good buoyancy control is essential when drift diving. Perth Scuba’s team can help you choose suitable equipment and ensure your setup is appropriate for the planned dives.
Where Will You Dive?
The exact training location will be selected according to the tides, weather, current and overall diving conditions. This ensures you can practise drift-diving techniques in an environment appropriate for training.
