Is Perth Good for Beginner Scuba Divers?
Is Perth Good for Beginner Scuba Divers?
If you have always wanted to try scuba diving, Perth is a brilliant place to begin.
With professional dive training, accessible shore-diving locations and the spectacular reefs of Rottnest Island nearby, new divers can develop their skills gradually while experiencing some of Western Australia’s underwater highlights.
You do not need any previous scuba experience to begin a PADI Open Water Diver Course. You simply need to be comfortable in the water, meet the course requirements and be ready for a new adventure.
Why learn to scuba dive in Perth?
Perth offers beginners a varied learning experience, with swimming pools, sheltered coastal dive sites and offshore reefs all within reach.
Rather than being placed straight into challenging open-water conditions, students learn through a carefully structured progression. Each stage gives you time to understand the equipment, practise essential skills and become more comfortable underwater.
Your training journey includes:
- Learning fundamental scuba skills in a swimming pool
- Practising those skills during sheltered shore dives
- Completing your certification dives from a boat at Rottnest Island
By the time you reach Rottnest, you will already have practised the skills needed to enjoy your final dives under the supervision of your PADI Instructor.
Start by developing confidence in the pool
Your first practical training session takes place in the controlled environment of a swimming pool.
This is where you become familiar with your scuba equipment and experience breathing underwater for the first time. Your instructor introduces each skill, demonstrates what to do and gives you time to practise.
You will learn important skills such as clearing water from your mask, recovering your regulator, controlling your buoyancy and communicating with your buddy.
There is no need to rush. The goal is to help you feel comfortable and confident before progressing to the ocean.
Continue with sheltered shore dives
After completing your pool training, you will move into open water for two shore dives at a suitable local Perth dive site.
This is your opportunity to apply your new skills in a real marine environment. Your instructor will guide you through the dive while you adjust to factors such as waves, natural surroundings and changing visibility.
Perth’s shore-diving locations can also introduce new divers to an assortment of local marine life. Depending on the site and conditions, you could encounter seahorses, octopus, cuttlefish, nudibranchs and schools of fish.
Dive locations are selected according to the weather, conditions and suitability for training.
Complete your course at Rottnest Island
One of the most exciting features of learning with Perth Scuba is the opportunity to complete your final two training dives at Rottnest Island.
Rottnest is known for its clear blue water, limestone reefs, swim-throughs and diverse marine life. Its underwater environment can include colourful reef fish, western blue devils, harlequin fish, cuttlefish, rays, Port Jackson sharks, nudibranchs and western rock lobster.
Marine encounters are never guaranteed, but every dive offers the possibility of discovering something new.
Your Rottnest dives are completed under the supervision of your PADI Instructor. These dives allow you to demonstrate the skills you have learned while beginning to experience the freedom and excitement of recreational scuba diving.
Will I be supported during the course?
Yes. Learning to scuba dive is a gradual process, and your instructor is there to support you throughout your training.
Your qualified PADI Instructor will explain and demonstrate each skill, answer your questions and help you develop safe diving habits. You will also learn how to dive with a buddy, check your equipment and respond appropriately to common situations underwater.
Full scuba equipment hire is included with the Perth Scuba Open Water Diver Course, so you do not need to purchase a complete set of dive gear before discovering whether scuba diving is right for you.
The course also includes PADI eLearning, pool entry, air fills, two shore dives and two Rottnest Island boat dives.
Is Perth suitable if I feel nervous?
Feeling nervous before your first scuba experience is completely normal.
Breathing underwater, wearing unfamiliar equipment and entering the ocean can all feel unusual at first. That is why your course begins in a swimming pool and progresses in stages.
Let your instructor know if you are anxious or need more time with a particular skill. Scuba diving is not about completing skills as quickly as possible. It is about becoming a capable, comfortable and safety-conscious diver.
Many confident divers began their first course feeling nervous. With patient instruction and practice, that uncertainty can turn into excitement.
What happens after I become certified?
Once you successfully complete the course, your PADI Open Water Diver certification allows you to continue exploring dive sites in Perth, throughout Western Australia and around the world within the limits of your training.
You can join recreational shore and boat dives, build your experience through Perth Scuba’s Manta Club or continue your education with courses such as PADI Advanced Open Water Diver.
Your PADI certification is only the beginning. Every future dive gives you another opportunity to improve your skills, encounter new marine life and explore somewhere different.
