What are the best dive spots in Perth for beginners?
For me, Ammunition Jetty has always been one of the best—and it is my personal favourite Perth shore dive. 🤿💙
Historically reaching only around 8–9 metres, Ammo Jetty gave newly certified divers plenty of time to relax, practise their buoyancy and build confidence. The pylons also provided a straightforward navigational reference: follow one side, explore slowly and return along the other.
But the real reason I love Ammo is its marine life.
If you took your time and looked closely, the site could reveal seahorses, squid, cuttlefish, nudibranchs, octopuses, hermit crabs and all kinds of character-filled little fish. It was proof that an incredible dive did not need to be deep or far offshore.
The site also taught an important lesson: buoyancy matters. Its silty bottom could be stirred up easily, so slow fin movements and good control helped protect both the visibility and the delicate life growing around the pylons.
⚠️ Important update: Ammunition Jetty and the water immediately beside and beneath it are currently closed following storm damage over the WA Day long weekend in 2026. Scuba diving, swimming, freediving and snorkelling are not permitted while the closure remains in place.
A new jetty is planned with improved access for divers and swimmers. Until it officially reopens, please respect the closure and choose another suitable site.
I cannot wait for the day we can safely return to my favourite local shore dive and see what is waiting beneath the new Ammo Jetty.
