Witnessing the Impact of Waste on Our Oceans
Witnessing the Impact of Waste on Our Oceans
Diving in remote locations can reveal breathtaking beauty, but it also exposes us to the harsh reality of our environmental impact. During our recent trip to Christmas Island, wevisited Greta Beach—a place with a name that makes you wonder. It's as if this beautiful spot has become a magnet for plastic waste from around the world.
Walking along the shore, we encountered a shocking variety of debris—plastic bottles, kids' toys, toothbrushes, syringes, and needles, just to name a few. Occasionally, you'll find an unexpected "treasure" like a new pair of thongs, but mostly, it's a stark reminder of the damage we’re doing to our oceans. Amongst the debris we found dead fish with plastic in their mouths.
The locals have programs in place and have bags available for people to collect the rubbish for collection. If you ever visit Greta beach please do the right thing and fill a bag.

We can all make better choices to reduce plastic waste and protect our oceans. If you’re passionate about our marine environment, join us for PADI AWARE Week from September 14-22. Perth Scuba will be hosting a Dive Against Debris Cleanup Day to adopt a local site and make a difference.
You know my passion forkeeping the marine environment clean, join us in September and be a part of the change our oceans need.
Stay tuned for more details as the event approaches! If you missed our last cleanup, we’d love to have you join us this time. Let's come together to protect what we love.
