Winter keeps playing nice! 👌
With the forecast looking surprisingly good—apart from the chilly temperatures—we decided Palm Beach Jetty would be the perfect location for our latest Manta Club night dive. It certainly didn’t disappoint.
Nine divers braved the cold and arrived ready for an evening beneath the surface. After gearing up, completing the dive briefing and checking that everyone had their torches ready, our buddy teams headed into the calm water to explore the jetty after dark.
Conditions were excellent for a winter night dive. The water was calm, visibility was great and there was plenty of marine life hiding among the pylons, sand and seagrass.
Palm Beach Jetty is always an interesting place to explore, but night diving reveals a completely different side of this popular local dive site. As daylight disappears, nocturnal creatures become more active and many animals that remain hidden during the day begin venturing out.
Our divers spotted seahorses tucked carefully among the growth, several curious occies, an eel and plenty of other local marine life. One of the evening’s more memorable characters was a particularly grumpy-looking Gurnard Perch, watching the divers pass by with its usual less-than-impressed expression.
With everyone taking their time and searching carefully, there was something new to discover around almost every pylon. Torchlight sweeping through the darkness made the jetty’s colourful growth, small critters and unusual residents stand out beautifully.
Eventually, it was time to leave the underwater nightlife behind and return to shore. Once everyone was safely out of the water and packed up, we finished the evening in true Manta Club style—with a well-earned hot cuppa, biscuits and plenty of stories about what each buddy team had discovered.
A big thank you to the nine divers who joined us and were willing to brave the chilly winter conditions. Your efforts were rewarded with calm water, excellent visibility, plenty of marine life and another fantastic local night dive.
Winter diving in Perth might require a few extra layers and a little more motivation to get into the water, but evenings like this prove that it can be well worth it!
