Seeking the Elusive Weedy Sea Dragon

Wednesday 3 May 2023

The sea was calm, no wind and the excitement palpable as our group of keen divers got together for the weedy hunt. I’ve got the coords for the weedies down pat now, and they have been easy to find the last few times. Sure enough, 5 weedies were spotted in total.

This dive site never fails to delight, and our divers also spotted a bobtail squid, octopus, a Port Jackson shark, stingrays, flounders, and the biggest jelly fish you ever did see, complete with a colony of fish in the middle!

Yes, the water is getting a bit cooler. Don’t let this deter you, get a drysuit if you have to. The diving is amazing this time of the year. Hope to see you soon!

Omeo Wreck Club Night Dive

Wednesday 26 April 2023

The weather is turning and it is the brave that take to the water at night.

Despite challenging conditions we ventured out at the Omeo Wreck on Wednesday night. Visibility was limited at around a metre but there was still some interesting critters out there. Franz found his Moray and the rest of us were green with envy. We looked just like him.

Thanks again to those that came along to our free Wednesday night Manta Club dive. These are great social events and an awesome way to meet like minded divers.

See you next Wednesday.

Sunday's Club Dive at Robb Jetty

Sunday 2 April 2023

Twenty two keen divers met at Perth Scuba for the traditional sausage sizzle, equipment hire and brief. After which we all headed off to Robb Jetty for the mornings dive. After a little challenge trekking over the sand dune to the beach was great to hit the water. Vis turned out to be pretty great 10 -15m and every one had a great time exploring the site .

Thanks for coming all!

Bulk Jetty Club Dive

Sunday 26 March 2023

Thank you to everyone that came to the Perth Scuba club dive. We met at the shop for a barbecue breakfast then headed down to Bulk Jetty. The water was nice and flat with only a slight current, visibility was average with only about 1 to 2 meters for most of the dive with it getting worse at a depth of about 8 meters. There were crabs, nudibranch and seahorses seen resulting in some very happy divers.

Ammunition Jetty night dive by Joey Pool

This week myself and Alison headed out to the Ammunition Jetty for a night dive together. I just love night diving with my camera and I don't get to do it near often enough. Night scuba diving can be an incredible and unique experience for a number of reasons. Here are just a few:

  1. Different Creatures: At night, many different marine creatures that are not usually seen during the day come out of their hiding spots to feed and hunt. This can include octopus, decorator crabs, catfish and a variety of fish that are more active at night.
  2. Different Colours: The colours of the underwater world are completely different at night. Many animals have bioluminescence, which means they emit their own light. The colours of some underwater creatures are completely different under torch and strobe lights, than under sunlight.
  3. Peace and Quiet: Night diving is typically much quieter than diving during the day, since most boats and other watercraft are not operating at night. This can create a peaceful and tranquil experience that is very different from diving during the day.
  4. Unique Perspective: Night diving can offer a different perspective on familiar dive sites. The underwater world can look completely different at night, and even sites that you have visited many times during the day can seem like completely new and exciting places to explore.
  5. Adventure: Night diving can be an adventure in itself. The darkness and limited visibility can create an exhilarating experience that is unlike any other. With the right equipment and training, night diving can be a safe and thrilling way to explore the underwater world.

If you haven't yet experienced night diving, then you're welcome to join us on our upcoming Advanced courses or our free Wednesday club night dives. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for upcoming club dive locations.
