Night diving on the North Wall at Coogee

Port Jackson Shark by Martin Crossley

Once again looking for somewhere not regularly visited for the night dives, the wind direction and swell coupled with an eye on the webcams at Fremantle harbor and Trigg somehow brought the North wall at Coogee into the crosshairs. Not a spot I’d done as a night dive so it was an instant choice. Three adventurous and Christmas shopping adverse divers came along and we were soon heading into surprisingly +7m viz as we cleared the short stretch of shallows and dropped quickly down to 5m.

Schooling fish, warm water, huge octopus and blue ring octopus rescue!

Blue ring octopus in a Sirena tuna can

This Sunday morning was great for diving, and almost perfect weather was enjoyed by all 23 of our divers on the Club Dive list today. The water conditions were slightly bumpy due to the winds not being exactly as predicted, particularly in the shallows, but stable once we got some depth. The visibility in the water was between 4-7 meters or so. The water was at 22C, so I changed into short wetsuit already, and it didn’t feel cold at all. We were surrounded by schools of small stripey fishes, few talmas, some morwong, and some soft corals we seen also. Some divers saw seahorses, a stingray, and a large octopus near the end of groyne.

Yellow spotted boarfish is a surprising visitor

Scorpion fish

Waking up to a cool cloudy 20oC morning after a stinking hot 39oC day before, the weather was up to some weird stuff and with the wind skipping around and an increasing swell it put north and west facing sites off the list. At a special request I plumed for a site which I might otherwise have not considered and as it turns out, I was extremely glad to return to after a year’s absence.

Exploring underwater at Jervoise Bay harbour wall

Manta Club divers at Jervoise Bay

Keeping an eye on the weather since early morning, the downpour hammering on the roof at work around 2pm had me thinking this would be anyone’s guess regarding viz at tonight’s proposed site and I quickly thought-up a river site in reserve. Thankfully my hedging bets on the inside of the Jervoise Bay harbour being secluded enough from the weather having done a reckie a few weeks earlier during a similar crap spell, all paid off.

Blue swimming crabs everywhere, but not allowed to take!

Blue swimmer crabs

Despite less than 5m viz no one was complaining and the exBHP Jetty turned up trumps again this Wednesday. Hiding under a pipe at the start was a shy Giant Australian Cuttlefish who just wouldn’t come out and show us its full size but was probably half grown. Clouds of Toadies dominate the shallows and what becomes very evident before too long are the hordes and hordes of Blue Swimming Crabs everywhere. Forget the river they’re all down here! And you can’t touch em – Ha!
